Madeira's Natural Park
With a view to safeguarding vast natural heritage which is a rarity worldwide, Madeira's Nature Reserve Park was classified as a biogenetic reserve in 1982 and inscribed by the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage in 1999.
The island is outstanding in its remarkable biodiversity, the most important being the evergreen LAUREL FOREST (LAURISILVA).
The park covers about two thirds of the island's territory with full and partial nature reserves as well as protected landscapes for recreational areas.
The protected areas include the Laurissilva Forest, the Desertas and the Selvagens Islands' natural reserves, the Garajau Marine Reserve near Caniço - Portugal's first and only marine reserve, the Rocha do Navio Natural Reserve plus the Natural Park itself.
