This is yet another major annual tourist attraction on the island of Madeira. The Flower Festival is held in April of each year, just after Easter and at springtime when flowers are in bloom and looking their best.
It's often said that it only rains in Madeira to facilitate the blossoming of the exuberant array of tropical flowers and vigorous vegetation and flora available in abundance on the island. They are profusely visible in parks, public and private gardens, on mountainsides along the winding roads and sprouting wildly from just about any stretch of land - all completely unequalled in their natural beauty.
During the enchanting Flower Festival, the main streets in the city centre of Funchal are invaded by multiple parades of eye-catching and dazzling floats, displaying a multiplicity of floral species, flower-clad sing and dance troops, permeating the air with delectable and intoxicating fragrances.
On the eve of the Flower Festival, a wall of hope is built by children who each lay a flower at the municipal town square. Floral "carpets" are built in the city and live musical concerts and performances are included in the program.
The Hotel Melia Madeira Mare prepares a program geared specifically to fully enjoy the festivities.
