Thousands of participants with magnificent floats and Samba Groups parade through the city streets of Funchal, amidst the rhythmical and lively sounds of Samba music.
Whilst on the Saturday night, the official allegorical procession takes place in the city centre of Funchal, the funny "trapalhão" parade is held on Shrove Tuesday - it's the "anything goes" fun and laughter parade, where local folk and just about anyone can participate in the most creative and original costumes.
Loads of entertainment and partying is held throughout the island during this time in hotels, bars and nightclubs.
